The Mt Vaea Digital Nature Trail is a pioneering conservation initiative by the Samoa Conservation Society. This innovative project effectively bridges the gap between outdoor exploration and digital education, creating a powerful tool for environmental awareness and ecological preservation in Samoa.
The design focused on a clean, accessible, and engaging user interface to showcase the reserve’s biodiversity. Categorized by 4 panels, the web page structure includes a project overview landing page with links to each of the panel pages for enhanced user experience, making detailed information on native species, geology, and conservation efforts easily discoverable for site visitors.
A key technical feature implemented was a dynamic QR code system. Placed along the nature trail, the codes enabling hikers to scan and instantly load relevant, species information directly from the project’s web pages onto their mobile devices. Furthermore, analytics tracking for these QR codes were set up, allowing the conservation team to monitor scan data and gather valuable insights into visitor engagement, such as total code scans or peak usage times, to help assess the project’s reach and effectiveness.
